Chapman Residence
Respecting the Neighborhood - This residence is a typical post war house built in the neighborhood of Westover. At 50 years plus, modernizaiton was overdue. After an initial cost analysis, renovation was determined the cheaper alternative to building new. It was also deemed the more energy efficient construction path. The main living level is arranged in an "open plan" for informal flexibility. The exterior design remains similar to the original hipped roof profile. The overall house form is compact with manipulations of wings and bays off the sides and rear. The strength of the exterior design is achieved through clarity of form and a complimentary palate of details, materials and color. The addition more than doubled the size of the original house. Still the remade version appears completely at home with neighbors.
