JER Residence
This new 5,400 sq. ft. house was designed for a retired empty nest couple. It is located at the crest of a hill overlooking Washington Golf Course. The client requested a contemporary design, yet respectful to its traditional neighboring homes. The plan is compact and vertically organized in response to the narrow steep sloping lot. The master suite and main living spaces are on the upper level. All guest rooms are on the main entry level. The family room and utility spaces are below. The central stair hall organizes the interior spaces. It also serves as a natural ventilation plenum. The house has a distinctly different front and rear face. The street elevation is respectful to neighbors both in material choice, massing and architectural treatment. The rear elevation is less restrained. The design responds to the program of interior spaces, site features, major views and solar orientation. Featured millwork, seen in the kitchen and stair hall, has a consistent theme of contrasting light and ebonized wood. The result is a striking combination similar to the effect employed in early 19th century German Biedermeier furniture.
