Lockett Residence
Small does not always mean less… This new 2,000 sq. ft. home uses a modern vocabulary to freely and energetically express form and function.
The design concept begins with the site. The property is located on a secluded wooded lot overlooking the George Washington Memorial Parklands. Zoning and lot restrictions dictate all accommodations for the car remain at the front of the property. The Architect and Owner agreed a two-car garage would dominate the small entry façade. The solution was to eliminate the garage in place of a detached carport. The simple form of the carport is little more then a sculptural screening devise. Upon approach, it creates framed views of the house and forms an entrance courtyard.
The main house is expressed as two shed roof forms joined by a central stair. The ground floor is a single open-plan space. Shed roofs form the master bedroom on one side and two guest rooms on the other. Primary park views are toward the North. Green design was employed through out the project including, minimal site disturbance, use of renewable construction and finish materials, high-energy efficiency and on-site storm water collection.
Construction is scheduled for late 2007.
