A quiet room...

This modest NW DC addition included a number of interior upgrades, but, the primary goal was a new den. The home owner referred to it as a "quite room" intended for much needed study and reflection.

The oversized glass bay window takes in the rear yard garden. High side facing clearstory windows allow afternoon light without sacrificing privacy or limiting furniture placement.

The exterior improvements along the west elevation were designed using traditional garden details and forms to help clean up and screen the unsightly utility. A new covered side entrance to the kitchen allows direct access to recycling and the alley. The arbor screens both a recycling storage bin and a new basement stair leading down to an Au Pair suite.
